Things That Your Kid Can Learn In The Pre Kindergarten Centers- An Overview

Research shows that the Pre K early learning centers have a positive impact on the social-emotional skills, school readiness, and cognitive growth of young kids. Besides, at these centers, the kids have the experiences, materials, and space that encourage their developmental milestones. And the teachers of these centers encourage them along the way. However, people often ask what our preschool-aged kids should learn in the pre kindergarten centers. The answer to this question is this early childhood environment works as the first step for your kid in the world of formal education. However, if you are not sure what your kid would or should learn at school, then this blog can help you learn what young kids can learn in these centers.

  • Social knowledge: The children often make their first friends in the early learning centers. It is because these centers don’t only offer the kids the scope to meet and play with their peer groups, but also offer them the scope to practice new social skills like taking turns, sharing, communicating with others, listening to others, and learning how to respect others. Learning social skills also prepares the kids for their kindergarten education in several ways:
    1. Building communication skills, and friendships, and enjoying cooperative play
    2. Learning problem-solving skills and conflict resolution
    3. Understanding other’s feelings and developing empathy for them
    4. Getting prepared for social expectations and group settings
    5. Learning emotional literacy and self-expression
  • Academic knowledge: Kindergarten or formal schools mostly focus on the academics of students. However, this never means that your kid has to wait till they are enrolled in kindergarten or first grade to start their academic content. Although the curriculum of every Pre K center differs, these centers mostly offer basic academic content to beginner learners. The common Pre K curriculum includes early literacy (communication, reading, and writing), science (physics, chemistry, biology, and planetary or earth sciences), math (basic equations, counting, number identifications, units of measurement, and geometry), and social studies.
  • Self-care knowledge: When the kids grow and develop, they start acting more independently. And this skill helps your kid to develop important self-care skills. While they already may get engaged in some type of self-care activities at home (using the restroom under your guidance or feeding themselves on their own), joining Pre K programs can help them further to improve upon this skill. So, apart from using the restroom or feeding on their own, the Pre K programs help the young learners to learn self-care skills like being responsible for their personal belongings like jackets or backpacks, washing hands before eating, and some other personal hygiene-related jobs, and taking off or putting on shoes, coats, or other things.
  • Creative knowledge: Early childhood collection goes beyond the traditional classroom setting. The majority of these programs offer different types of learning experiences and activities to help young learners develop creative thoughts. These often include drama (acting out stories, dressing up, pretend play, and other similar activities), visual arts (collaging, painting, drawing, or sculpting), creative movement, dance, and music (playing instruments or singing).

Process-based creative activities offered by these programs are mainly open-ended and child-centered. Therefore, these activities help the kids to grow as curious learners. All these activities allow the kids to discover, explore, and experiment latest concepts in the most meaningful manner instead of making or ending up with any particular product. Not only do these creative development activities help the kids to develop cognitive skills, but these content areas or lessons also contribute to growth in some other areas. Besides, visual art activities like painting and drawing allow the kids to practice fine motor skills. Young learners can also develop their gross motor skills through different art areas like creative movement and dance. Some of the Pre K programs also offer stand-alone creative arts activities while others integrate all those lessons into different areas of the curriculum. It means your child will be able to draw the results of a science experiment, try different types of combinations, or learn about math in music.

  • Problem-solving knowledge: Problem-solving is a lot more than just learning different activities and math lessons. Your kid can easily solve different types of real-world and academic problems by developing critical thinking skills. A good Child development center Brooklyn with different activities, helps young learners to improve their problem-solving knowledge. These activities include different types of hands-on experiences and explorations like blending tempera paint colors in the art area, building the block towers, etc.
  • Other skills that the kids learn in the Pre K programs: Pre K programs allow the kids to be more independent not only by taking care of themselves but also by helping fellow Pre K schoolers. Kids are naturally geared toward helping and doing things on their own. The Pre K programs prepare them by setting up some structured routines. These include:
    1. Storing their personal belongings in their cubby
    2. Cleaning up from the regular activities before moving to another
    3. Focusing on a teacher and listening to others while they are speaking
    4. Practicing personal hygiene by washing hands before eating

How do Pre K programs prepare the kids for formal schools?

Pre K programs are designed for kids aged between 3 and 4. These programs are aimed to prepare the students for the type of learning and the environment of a formal classroom. Starting from reciting ABCs to following simple instructions like raising their hands, these programs prepare young learners to acclimate to the changed learning environments.

According to experts, every child should join the Pre K program to have an equal start in their education. Studies have also proved that students, who start behind, often remain behind throughout the school years. So, the Pre K programs have a huge impact on the ability of the kids to succeed in kindergarten and the following school grade.

Considering this thing, I admitted my son to the Pre K segment of Brooklyn Preschool of Science before he started a formal education. At this science-based preschool, kids learn different skills that make them kindergarten-ready. Besides, this school also offers an integrated science-based curriculum that encourages the innate curiosity of young learners through Math, language, and literacy development.
