Why STEM in Early Childhood Matters at Brooklyn Preschool of Science

When most people hear “STEM,” they picture older kids building robots or coding apps. At Brooklyn Preschool of Science, we know that STEM learning actually starts in the earliest years—and that preschoolers are some of the best scientists you’ll ever meet.

Our kids are natural scientists

Our students question, test, and explore all day long. When they pour water between cups, build a tower until it falls, or watch an animal in our classroom habitats, they’re doing real scientific thinking.

At Brooklyn Preschool of Science, teachers:

  • Turn everyday play into hands-on investigations.
  • Encourage children to observe closely, ask questions, and try again.
  • Use rich science vocabulary in natural, playful ways.

These small moments add up to a strong foundation in how the world works.

We build problem-solvers, not memorizers

The world our children are growing into changes quickly. Instead of focusing on rote facts, we focus on helping kids think, explore, and feel confident tackling new challenges.

Through our STEM-rich activities, children at Brooklyn Preschool of Science learn to:

  • Ask their own questions instead of waiting for an answer.
  • Try ideas, make mistakes, and keep going.
  • Work together to test solutions and share what they discovered.

That mindset—“I can figure this out”—supports them in reading, writing, friendships, and everything that comes next.

STEM, language, and feelings all connect

STEM at Brooklyn Preschool of Science isn’t just about numbers and experiments; it’s also about communication and emotions.

During a simple activity—like mixing safe ingredients to create a “volcano” or observing our classroom animals—children:

  • Learn new words like predict, observe, compare, and habitat.
  • Practice taking turns, sharing tools, and listening to friends’ ideas.
  • Experience excitement, surprise, and sometimes frustration, and learn how to handle those feelings with caring adults by their side.

STEM becomes a powerful way to build language, social skills, and emotional resilience.

Hands-on STEM is built into our day

You won’t see kids sitting still memorizing facts. You’ll see them moving, touching, building, and experimenting.

At Brooklyn Preschool of Science, we use:

  • Blocks, ramps, and loose parts for engineering towers, bridges, and marble runs.
  • Water, sand, and natural materials to explore volume, texture, and change.
  • Magnets, flashlights, and mirrors to investigate forces and light.
  • Simple tools—like droppers, magnifying glasses, and measuring cups—so children feel like real scientists.

Our classrooms, materials, and routines are designed so STEM isn’t an “extra”—it’s woven into the way kids play and learn every day.

STEM for every child

We believe every child deserves to see themselves as a scientist, engineer, or inventor. By offering strong STEM experiences in early childhood, we open doors for all children, not just the ones who already have access to enrichment at home.

At Brooklyn Preschool of Science, we:

  • Create inclusive, welcoming STEM experiences for all learners.
  • Make sure girls and underrepresented groups see that science is absolutely “for them.”
  • Celebrate curiosity, effort, and creativity—not just “right answers.”

When children hear, “You are a scientist,” and experience it in their daily play, it changes how they see themselves

How families can support STEM at home

You don’t need a lab or fancy equipment to support STEM thinking at home. Try:

  • Asking open-ended questions: “What do you notice?”, “What do you think will happen?”, “How could we fix that?”
  • Involving your child in real-life tasks: measuring ingredients, sorting laundry, or comparing which objects sink or float in the bath.
  • Going on “science walks” around Brooklyn to notice patterns in buildings, shadows, leaves, and clouds.
  • The goal isn’t to push advanced content. It’s to protect and nurture your child’s natural curiosity—and give it room to grow.

At Brooklyn Preschool of Science, STEM in early childhood is about raising curious, confident problem-solvers who know their ideas matter. When we mix science, play, and care, we’re not just preparing children for kindergarten—we’re preparing them for life.
